When opportunity knocks? Will you see it? Will you walk through the door?

Everyday doors of opportunity open and close.

This happens because the world of energy is always spinning, moving, shifting and the same is happening within you. Your energy is shifting, moving, spinning even changing depending on how you feel, how you think and the actions you take. The outside world energy shifts due to the outside influencers of others.

Big questions that often arise are: How will I know if the opportunity is a good one? Is it better than where I am today? How can I see it? Why could I miss it? And when should I open the door and walk through?

Let’s explore.

Seeing opportunities means being able to consider making a choice to do something different.  And doing something different requires the awareness to accept that what is today could be better tomorrow by taking a different path.

Making this choice to walk the new path is blocked due to a variety of reasons. Blocks are based on the beliefs and values we cling to in that moment. If we value loyalty and commitment, then making a change could feel like giving up verses permission to let go. We must learn through our own experiences when it’s ok to let go, give ourselves that permission to let go and walk through another door.

Situations can present themselves due to our own inability to adapt or to the inability of our situation to adapt. Since the world is always spinning, eventually there will be misalignment and herein lies the problem, often an icky situation that rises to the surface and presents itself.

An example..

You are working in a job.

After about a year, you finally grasp the elements of your work and you are promoted.  In your new position you start the process again, learning, growing and adapting.

There are new elements of this position which present challenges and not a lot of support, yet you continue to work through the process and engage with the company as a whole as those events present themselves.

Now enters a new boss. He’s entering with his own expectations, beliefs, values and biases.

After his assessment of his responsibilities and his team, he believes that your skills are not at the level to be as efficient as he would like. The new boss also has difficulty communicating his expectations and over time the gap of dissatisfaction rises.

You may find yourself in the midst of a potential crises. Your loyalty is being undervalued. As you continue to go through the motions at work, the new boss hasn’t suggested any ways to help you work through the skills gap he expects.  Nor have you realized until now the degree of your perceived or real skills gap.  You further learn, your hours are cut back, without an explanation and once you meet with your boss, he explains that they have hired a new person in the department part time so they cannot increase your hours.

Can you see now how the width of the problem is expanding verses a solution or resolution is coming together?

This is a perfect time to assess, should this door close and what door of opportunity might be next. Loyalty is an awesome value and one worthy of character to both employer and employee. Yet loyalty can blind us from seeing the shortfalls we ourselves need to up level to meet the job requirements.

On the other side, leaders are mentors and good leaders who recognize how to maximize the strengths and values of their employees can not only support the growth and potentially close the skills gap of the employee, yet when they up-level their team, they prevent turnover. Others become inspired and even trusted under their leadership.

Trust is seeing that the boss is supportive and creates a safe and growth-oriented environment in which to work.

When to stay, when to go and when to grow are ever evolving questions that are raised throughout life- whether in our professional lives or personal lives.

Finding alignment requires knowing who we are within, how we tick.

What pushes our buttons, what keeps us stuck, what we value and believe and what we aspire and want in our life today and in the future. Then and only then, can we seek the places and experiences we are meant to align with until it’s time to move, experience, shift, grow and repeat.

The fuel that propels us, like the tail of a rocket ship, is the desire for more or better … this includes money, incentives, recognition, relationships- mentors/colleagues/ partner/spouse, a greater impact on others. It could be the desire to greater happiness and fulfillment.

Life is a journey and equipped with the personal development skills to navigate, it can be a journey directed and impacted by you, for you and for the others you impact along the way!
